Erased from history by the Bolsheviks, Emerich Rath is an absolutely fascinating story of humanity, bravery and pure badassery.
The tragic story of Hanč and Vrbata is one of the founding stories of Czech culture and, at the same time, a sad reminder of totalitarian censorship and Czech spinelessness. As a Prague German, Emerich Rath didn't suit the communist regime, so his life achievements and his real role in the "Hanč and Vrbata" story were hushed up and distorted.
It was Emerich Rath who found the dying Hanč in the storm. Frostbitten himself, he dragged him through the snowdrifts and then called for help. In heated times, when rising nationalism sharpened the friction between Germans and Czechs, a half-dead German set out to help a dying Czech.
That story alone would make him a legend, but Emerich's list of achievements doesn't end there.
1912 - German boxing champion, heavyweight
1914 - European Ice Hockey Championship with the Czech team
1916 - Silver Cross of Merit for service as a ski instructor in the Alps
1924 - by kayak down the Seine all the way to the Olympics in Paris, plus the title of Czechoslovak kayak champion
1925 - honourable mention in cross-country skiing at the German-Austrian Championship in Kitzbühel
But his greatest feat came during the Protectorate, when he refused to claim Reich citizenship and hid a Jewish friend in his Prague shop. The commies thanked him with nationalisation, prison for tramping aka "Americanism" and death in poverty.
